Clomid and weight

Hello, I am new to this particular message board. I will give you a breif background of my IF problems. Basically, I got pregnant and had a baby in 1998. A year and a half later my menstrual cycles had not shown up. My ob/gyn did a DNC on me thinking this would help clean me out and take care of the problem. Well, my cycles still never showed up, so I went to a different ob/gyn, who put me on Aygestin to bring on a monthly cycle. He would then take me off the Aygestin occasionally to see if it helped, which it didn't. So now, almost 8 years later, I still do not have a monthly cycle unless induced by Aygestin. I have an appointment this week for a consultation to be put on Provera and Clomid. I am very worried about this because I have read that clomid does not work well in women who are over weight, which I am. Has anyone who is overweight taken clomid and had success? Also, has anyone went as long of time as myself without ovulating? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I have taken clomid in the past, it didn't work for me b/c I have additional problems, but I am about 20-30 lbs overweight. Some of that has to do with clomid b/c I gained while taking it. While I was on clomid I did have signs of it working. I had many follicles each month, but they never knew if I was actually dropping the egg. I have also taken Aygestin several times after I took Lupron and it seemed to bring my period back every month and then I started on my own after a few cycles. I wish you the best of luck and I have never heard that it doesnt work as well on overweight individuals.
Hopefully this is more help than not!!

Clomid worked great for me (well kinda!). I got pregnant on 150mg of clomid in 2000 with my daughter. This time around we have tried, unsuccessfully to do that again with just clomid and bms. We are moving on to more aggressive tx.

I know that those of us who have extra weight it may take a higher dosage, but it does work!

Good Luck!!! ++++ thoughts!

Thank you both for your replies. It's always good to hear of someone else taking similar medications, especially if they have worked! As I mentioned before, I have a consultation in a couple days about the clomid, so I don't know exactly when I will be starting it, but I'll keep ya posted. I'm hoping maybe I can wait until September 1st, just to have a fresh start of a new month. Thanks again! Avery

Clomid CAN WORK for us fluffy girls!!!! My RE does think that VERY heavy women will not ovulate on clomid...At the time of my first RE visit..I had lost 89 pounds...although I am STILL rather fluffy...I started out with 50 mg..then 100mg and no Ovulation. Then I had five Ovulating cycles with 150mg..conceived on the fifth but turned out to be a ectopic preg. My RE said that had I not lost the weight...Clomid would not have worked on me?/ But really who knows?

More than likely you will just have to take a higher dosage..all depending on too how heavy you are. Did your ob or RE ever suggest you doing Birth Control Pills for like three months to bring on or maybe regulate your cycles. The GOOD thing about clomid is...once you take the correct dosage to make you O...It WILL help regulate your cycle. My cycle length went from every 43-56 days to every 32-34 days on clomid. Although they only like for you to take it six months as if thins your lining...and I am wondering if that is what went wrong in my case?

Sorry so long...Hope this helps...and WELCOME to FT! :D

I'm not sure what 'very' fluffy means but im 342 and was that weight when i got pregnant with my dd.

Clomid does not work for everyone, overweight or not. So I cant see how a dr could know if it was the weight or that clomid just didnt work for the person. Of course, most drs always assume weight is the culprit behind whatever doesnt work. I wonder how the normal weight folks feel and what excuses they are getting when things dont work? I bet they dont get 'well you are too normal weight for it to work'.....

Drs annoy me sometimes....

HUGS. Welcome back Goldie. Was thinking of you just the other day, wondering how you were doing!

Thank you both for your encouraging thoughts. My doctor did not put me on birth control pills due to the fact that I had a blood clot in my leg and the BCP's could cause this to happen again. So the Aygestin was prescribed to regulate my cycles, which had fewer side effects. I am currently 235 lbs, so I know that doesn't help my situation. I have been this weight for about 5 years and to be honest I think part of my struggles with taking the weight off is because of stress over IF and other things going on around me. At times, I don't think it will ever come off, but hopefully with some positive reinforcement I can get that extra boost to do more about it. So again, thank you both for being encouraging. I am anxiously awaiting to see if this clomid will work! Avery

Thanks Julie! Good to be feeling better! :) Yeah...I sooo agree...Dr.'s love to pull the weight card over and over for everything.

Avery...I am sure clomid will work for you...But IF is such a wait and see game...and that always has made me want to eat to ease the pain and worry. I am 277...stuck there this whole year basicly. But I am not exercising either.

Good Luck...Be sure to update on your RE visit!

Julie, I completely agree about doctors blaming everything on weight - it is annoying! I also hate the surprised looks they usually get when they see me in there (300lbs) then discover my blood pressure, blood sugar and everything else are perfectly normal.

Clomid did not work for me and I had very minimal response on injectables (ovulated once in 6 months of treatment) so my doctor suggested losing weight. I hated hearing that, but since we were spending $1000+ per cycle for zero chance of pregnancy (since I wasn't ovulating), I'm working on losing weight because I want to do anything I can that may help.

You know what doctors love and I mean love to blame everything on weight. Ok some of it I agree with like diabetes, high blood pressure, aches and pains but infertility I don't think so because there are a ton of women that are extra fluffy that have a ton of babies. My old OBGYN kept stating I would have to lose a lot of weight before trying to conceive and the reason that I was so irregular and didn't get my period often was because of the weight even though I have had this problem since I first started to get my period and in high school I was 150 something and almost 5'6" and to me that is not overweight at all. Anyway he would say this even when I was 190 something. After I got married and me and dh decided it was the right time to try my OBGYN refused to help until I lost weight (I was up to 235 at this point) so I went to another OBGYN that was also a fertility specialist and he confirmed for me that if it was a weight issue than when I was thinner my cycles would of been regular. Anyway I am undiagnosed but most likely have PCOS. With my insurance there is total coverage with fertility treatments in stage 1 which is medication rounds and blood tests to check hormone levels, etc. Once you get to all the major testing and other treatment you get bumped up to the second level and there is a lifetime max which me and dh didn't want to tap into until it was necessary so we figured lets try the medication route first. Anyway I did 3 rounds of clomid before I got pregnant with dd who is 10 months old now. I did a lot of reading and research into clomid when first starting and it stated that clomid worked a lot better in women with pcos or irregular cycles. Now we are going to venture into trying for a 2nd in a month or so. Don't know if it will work again or not but I do know that clomid did work and I am fluffy.

Thanks again everyone for your insight. I had my appt. this morning for the clomid consultation and my ob/gyn actually made me feel better about this situation. He basically didn't have much to say about my weight and thought that if the clomid was going to work, it would work in the first 3 cycles, regardless of weight. So, I agree sometimes weight can cause us to have certain health problems, but when it has to do with infertility, I think there is usually an underlying problem and doctors find it easier to blame them on weight issues. I can honestly say that I do feel better about the clomid and my ob/gyn said that if I did not respond to the 50 mg dose, then he will up the dose next month. I think I might go ahead and start the provera on Saturday and then see what happens. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for listening. Avery

Where in Texas are you? I am in the Killeen area. My doctor told me that I needed to lose weight to get preggers too and to be healthy. She broke it down to where I could understand how it relates to me cuz I have seen some big girls and they have baby after baby and I have to work at it. So be it...

I am in the Dallas area. My RE was actually wonderful about my weight from the very beginning. I was terrified in my initial appointment that he would suggest losing weight before starting, but he said that weight isn't necessarily a problem. I went through six months of treatment and only ovulated once, and since we were spending so much per cycle, it made sense to try to lose some weight. He did as your doctor did and explained how it is affecting me personally instead of blaming weight in general. I know my ovaries and uterus look great, and he said the estrogen held by the fat cells is interfering with the fertility drugs.

I liked him a lot better than my OB/GYN, who said "So you don't ovulate, no problem! We can prescribe Clomid to fix that." It would have been a lot easier on me if I had known from the beginning that Clomid doesn't work for everyone.

Thats true. I can't say that it doesn't work, but for me it did not work for this last cycle which was my first. I like my fertility specialist she is funny and tells it like it is. I like that she shoot straight from the hip. I have only been to Dallas once and that was to go to the airport.

Has anyone on this board been a dailey pot smoker and conceived?

I don't use any drugs, so I don't know from personal experience, and I'm not sure why you would want to do something that could compromise your health or your fertility if you are trying to conceive. However, I used to work for Child Protective Services and I can assure you that women who smoke pot regularly (as well as use cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, etc.) get pregnant all the time.

Well, you asked the question, so I answered it with the knowledge I had. I'm not sure if you noticed, but I said I am a FORMER employee of CPS. There is a reason for that. Also, I never judged anyone, just said I didn't understand.

I don't think my response warranted such an attack from you. I saw that another thread of yours was locked for a similar outburst.
