I just lost 12 pounds in about a month.

My dh and I have been on the South Beach Diet (good carbs, good fats) for about a month, and I am already down 12 pounds. My OB/GYN was really happy with this and of course so am I.

Of course that said it's a small chunk out of the 150 pounds I'd like to lose, but at least it's a start.

I'm hoping that losing some weight will increase our chances of conception... I am about a week out from when I can start testing this month.

Just thought I'd share! :)

So what would be a typical day of eating? I had heard about the diet but have never tried it....Good for you, keep it up.

I usually have eggs with salsa for breakfast, a yummy salad for lunch (no croutons), and a dinner of meat and 2 vegetables. I keep a stock of sugar free hard candies and try to watch how much saturated and trans-fat I take in. I allow myself to cheat every now and then, just so I don't feel deprived. I just don't make a habit of cheating.

It's really not a hard diet to follow, though, and it is also essentially the diet recommended in "what to expect when you're expecting," so when we finally do get PG then we can keep it up and be healthy!

So, you can stay on the diet during pregnancy? What about fruits or dairy, do you get to have those later on? I should try it because I was on Atkins years ago and lost lots of weight but I never felt it was that healthy..

After the first 2 weeks they encourage fruits and low-fat dairy to be added in. Also whole grain breads, crackers, oatmeal, etc. They mainly want you to avoid simple carbohydrates that are absorbed quickly by the body and turned into sugar. Complex carbohydrates are good for you and encouraged.

I find myself eating a lot less processed stuff on this diet. I have also found that there is an increasingly wide array of foods sweetened with Splenda, which never enters your blood stream, and is therefore safe during pregnancy. It tastes *almost* like sugar and comes in packets as well as a form that measures cup-for-cup like sugar does, so you can cook with it easily. It really helps satiate my sweet tooth without doing damage to my diet or my teeth!

Atkins never seemed healthy to me, either. I think when Dr. Atkins died they found that he was pretty unhealthy...not a good sign.

How great! Keep up the good work!! I just rejoined Weight Watchers - the only program I ever had any luck at...I tried South Beach, but I don't do well with the carb cutting - could never make it out of Phase 1  . I know several people that have had much success on South Beach, not just taking the weight off, but keeping it off, even a few years later. I agree that it is a healthy diet, with a good variety of foods.

Good luck!

Kelly
