I am now on my 8th cycle of clomid, and asked the RE if we could try something different beings I feel we are getting no where here! I am a PCOSer weighing about 260lbs and am 5'8". RE told me there were no more options for me because of my weight he can not find my ovaries...hardly ever!!!! Does anyone else have difficulties w/ their RE finding the ovaries, and is it because of my weight he can not see them?! And is this the end of the line till I lose a good amount of weight? I knew weight may play an issue eventually but I thought we would be able to try injections or something else but I guess since he cant see my ovaries he is worried about overstimulating and not being able to check, although he has no problem charging me monthly for an U/S that he doesnt even see my ovaries in!!! Im just having a challenging day...any replies would be nice and helpfull!

I dont understand why he cannot see your ovaries. I was much heavier and shorter than you are. Seeing my ovaries were never a problem. The only concern was during IVF and retrevial. But they were able to see my ovaries to do the retrevial. You may want to consider trying a diffrent RE. Unless your ovaries are very high in your body than that can cause them to be hard to see. Good Luck

I've had this problem with the lady that does u/s at RE's office. She claims she can never see my left ovary and when she does see it says she can't get a good picture. Last u/s she did (internal, of course) I was ready to say that if she tried any harder she'd probably be able to see my left lung!!! I dread u/s with her! This cycle my RE actually did the initial scan and had no problem seeing both ovaries! It's so frustrating!

Hi ladies.
I just completed my first IVF cycle. During my baseline u/s the RE's assistant said that she couldn't see my ovaries. I was a little stunned to say the least b/c I've had a zillion u/s over the years and never once had anyone else not been able to see or find my ovaries. The cycle did not go very well. I only produced 5 follicles. After talking to many women, it appears that I may have been oversuppressed. I had to take BCP's for three wks prior to having my baseline u/s and starting my stim's. I had never taken BCP's b4 and I truly think that the d*amn pills not only shut down my ovaries but completely shrunk them. I think the BCP's caused me to be oversuppressed.
I am now starting my next cycle after a chemical pg and they have me on the BCP's again. They just won't listen to my concerns of oversuppression. I guess we'll see what happens.
Oh, I am 5'5" and weigh 180lbs. Regardless of my weight, I have never had anyone have any difficulties, b4 IVF, in finding my ovaries.
Good luck to you ladies.

Hi there
My RE has trouble finding my ovaries-- seems to only find them on the left side when he tells me to take a deep breath and then he pushes on my stomach (I am 325 lbs at 5'4"-- so I have a belly!)-- dont think he has ever seen the right side. I am starting Gonal F tomorow (10 days 450IU/day) then attempting an IUI. MY RE wont do an IVF because of the difficulty in finding my ovaries due to my weight.
I would defiintely ask your doc to try pushing on your tummy to find them!

When I was 19, I had to have an u/s due to severe abdominal pain, the dr thought something might be wrong w/ovaries. The tech did an abdominal u/s and she couldn't see anything, she pushed on my stomach so hard I thought she was gonna bust my bladder and I had to pee so bad it hurt, LOL! They gave up, the pain went away and never did find out what the prob was, although I suspect it had something to do with IF all this time, but who knows? The dr hated to say it, but because I was so overweight, that may have been the problem (at the time, I was 220lbs and 5'7"). But, when I had to have an internal u/s with ds #2, the tech saw my ovaries just fine, in fact saw a corpus luteum cyst and had to do another u/s the next month, good thing our insurance at the time paid 100%! Dang I wish I still had that insurance, labs and xrays (including u/s, ct scans, mris, ect.) were all paid 100% and our monthly premium for dh and me was just $120/mo. Sometimes I really hate my hubby's employer as they were the ones that decided to drop that insurance plan. Oh well, win some lose some.

Honestly, if you have gone through 8 rounds of clomid with no results, and he is unwilling to try other options, I would switch doctors. Clearly from reading the replies you know it is possible to try something different at your weight. Doctors are often very quick to blame everything on weight. I am not saying he can't find your ovaries ....maybe he can't. BUT maybe another doctor is better and WILL find them.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck!

This is exactly what my RE said to me in my second visit with him in Dec. So I did four cycles of clomid with no US monitoring...finally I just asked him to be more aggressive. I had the vag. US...and it was fine..no problem..he started talking about me having two good sized follicles..and I was thinking..is that it? I am very close to your weight...and I am only 1-inch taller??? It has to be more than your weight. Could it be he is using an older model US machine? Or like Denise said...Your ovaries could be high...which has nothing to do with weight.
If I were you...I would try and schedule your next US with someone else in the office...I know their are two other people who can do US besides my RE in the office.

Thanks for all the replies guys...I have looked on the internet to see what would cause my ovaries to be so hidden and no luck and other woman that I know that are my size have never had any issues...was starting to feel like "Okay, Im fat, infetile, and now a new problem?!" My RE always does the Ultrasounds and we have tried 2 different machines but I am looking for a different RE in the area. My RE is super nice but he is still fairly young and I feel someone older may have a little more knoweldge of what is going on...w/ my RE, he is sounding like I will be put to a hault unless I lose weight or get my ovaries to come out of hiding! Thanks again for the replies

well, i can sorta relate. my right ovary stands out bright and happy and as easy to see as anything. but my left one, it hides out behind my uterus. so when the tech starts to looking with the u/s probe, it feels like the probe is in my leg. its awful. they never said my weight had anything to do with it. but im sure theyre thinking it. losers. it sucks being heavy and being treated differently in regards to TTC. being told we cant get pregnant because we are fat (that was told to me verbatim but an OB).
good luck
PS-clomid didnt do a thing for me either. didnt even cause a blip on the the ovulation radar

I have the same problem as marquess78. Everytime my RE does a vaginal ultrasound he tells me that he can't see my left ovary. He has no problem seeing my right one. After about 6 times of him telling me this, while he was picking and prodding inside I me, I asked him if they were any other kinds of tests that will help him see my left ovary. He told me the best thing for me to do is go to a Radiologist.
Well I made the appt. and let me tell you that as soon as he started, he saw my left ovary in about 2 seconds without hurting me. I asked him why my RE couldn't see it and he told me it was because it is sitting on top of my uterus. It was sooo high up that my RE never bothered checking it.
So to make a long story short, I would ask him why he can't see it and if there was another test that he can do. Or even get a second opinion...
