Have any of you ladies used Depo provera shots, for birth control (though here I doubt that) or for progesterone? The reason I ask is, my previous gyno (previous only because I had moved) after giving my oral progesterone to up my levels with no luck switched me to the depo shots because they had the highest levels of progs. in them that I could take. Mind you this was all after the fact that there was no obvious reason why I couldn't get pregnanat other than the fact I just wasn't ovulating, but I must add I also had been having atypical cells in my uterus and she was scared of me developing cancer.

The first 6 months I took the shots every month, and typically a woman using as bc takes it every 3 months. After that I only took it the usual every 3. After over a year and at my new gyno, having no respite from those bad cells, and having horrible sensitivity in my vaginal area, and other what I now know as side effects from the depo shots I've cried STOP!!! I had a D&C back in June, and at first my dr wanted me to have a hysterectomy, fearful of me getting sick in the future, but now, she wants me to have a break, and see if some of the remaining side effects leave (its been since March since I've had a shot). Though I still feel crampy almost daily and my back aches.... I am so torn what to do. She is thinking of putting me on provera to give me a period, but I've done this in the past and I don't always bleed. :(

I've almost given up hope of ever being a mommy....

I'm just curious if anyone else has had a reaction to the depo shots... sorry to be so long winded

:hismilie: Welcome Rhonda!...Always glad to have a newbie!...Hope you will stay with us for a while.

Yeas ago I was on Birth Control Pills which I loved...low pain and my cycle always came and went as it was suppose to. But I develop high blood pressure because of them. So I went off of the BCP and about a year later began to have very irregular cycles...like bleeding for 17 days..never would regulate itself. So my ob suggested a DNC and the depo shot. He said that I did not have many options because it was basicly the shot or a hysterectomy because I kept bleeding. The only explanation for the bleeding he gave me was "hormonal imbalance?" So I began the shots...and after about four months my cycle disappeared completely...I really could not tell I was even taking them EXCEPT for two things...#1..My hair became thinner. #2..I gained about 80 pounds the six years I was on it.

Fast forward to 2001...when I began to start thinking about having a baby. So November 2001 was my last injection. I was told that my cycle would return with between 1 and 10 months. So I was due for another shot in Feb and did not go...I did not get my cycle until the middle of June of 02. I was very caucious not to get pregnant July, Aug., Sept of 02 because we had planned a 14 day trip to Hawaii. So I officially began ttc in Oct of 02...I HAVE GET TO GET PREGNANT.

I personally believe that Depro Provera shot could have something to do with it?...I have read stories where young girls can no longer have children because they took this shot. I have asked both of my current obgyn and they say NO..there is no scientific proof..but I know someone personally who lost ALL of her ovarian reserve after she came off of Depro Provera and her doctor blames this shot.

When I think back...I guess I did what I had to do...What my doctor told me to do...I was only 23 at the time...Way to young for a hysterectomy?..So if I had to choice I choose correctly. It is so confusing sometimes. I believe the less we fuss with mother nature the better. It is a hard call.

In my opinion I would go see an RE...to get his advice...even if it is not covered under your insurance...just go for a SECOND opinion. Better to be safe than sorry.

Let us know how you are doing. :)
