Hi ladies,
I am still pretty new to this group. We have been trying to concieve for 2 yrs now on our own. So we started IF. We did our first IUI cycle with clomid last month. My doctor decided i have pcod due to the fact my progesterone level was only 9 on day 21 and one of my follicles dissolved and did not come out of the ovaries. He started me on Metformin 250mg and wants to go up to 1500 over the next two weeks. Is this the standard dose? How do any of you handle the lovely side effects it has been causing? Upset tummy, gas , bloating, diarhea etc...? ps was also told to lose weight in a nice way but still annoying. Have lost 15 pounds in last 3 months but have a bout 25 pds to go.

I am on 1500 mg. I had a terrible upset stomach on the regular Matformin. It went away after about a month. I never switched to the ER version but would have if the upset stomach had continued much longer. Most people that I have talked to have lost weight on the Metformin. Unfortunatly, I have not been one of those lucky people!! Good Luck!!

I started two weeks ago. Started on 250 mg and over the first week went up to 1500. I had terrible pain, cramping, gas, and would be constipated one day and diareha the next. This only lasted for 5 days. Now I am fine except that I am hungry all the time and have gained some weight. I know they say you lose weight on it but not me. Other then that it has not been to bad. Just make sure to eat food when you take a pill. I always a pill right as I sit down to eat.

I have PCOS which we've know for 3 years. I didn't get put on metformin until I was sent to an RE though and Metformin was the very first thing that he put me on. I'm on 1500 a day. I really didn't have too many side affects after the first couple of weeks on the full dose. I did have gas and increased bms but that went away. I have a mental block about taking any medication so now when I open the metformin bottle I want to throw up as soon as I get a whiff of it. But that's just me being crazy. I have lost a little weight while on it though nothing major. I hope this helps. :hismilie:

Hi everyone,
Thank you for all the responses. I have been on it a week now and it is a little bit better. So hopefully another week or so and the side effects will be pretty much all gone :)

The RE had me go on a lower carb diet. She recommended the Zone or South Beach. And definitely avoid eating anything white.
Some people have more trouble than others. honestly, it's taken almost a year to get to where I had no GI issues.
Good luck,

Initially on Metformin, I lost about 15 pounds with no changes to my lifestyle. Not long after I started IF treatments I had a bad car accident and I gained the weight back.
I changed my diet and started to exercise to help the back injury. I topped 300 pounds and I feared I might not be able to walk. I do aquacise 3-5 times a week. I dont eat sugar. I watch my carbs. I have lost 75 pounds. I dont think the Metoformin alone would have done it. I had to change some things about me.
I found out that aside from the PCOS which makes me insulin resistant, that I am also pre-diabetic. Diabetes runs in my family, so that doesnt help. I have managed to get my blood sugar into the normal range. Its made a world of difference.
For those of you who dont enjoy the gym any more than I do, you might try swimming or aquacise. VERY low inpact and its very refreshing. I am not a fan of the heat, so it makes workouts more fun. I used to fence, but the back injury took that away. I just use a public facility so I dont even have to worry about outrageous fees. Its very affordable.
I hope this helps.
