Hi everyone!
My doc is starting me on clomid in a couple of weeks. He said that I am having amenorrhea because I am so overweight. Has anyone else been told this and used clomid? Also he said that because I almost never get it to just start the clomid the first time when I am ready. I have read that it needed to be started on a certain day of your cycle. Has anyone had any experience w/ this either? Lastly, I read that overweight women are more likely to suffer mc as I did 4 years ago, so I asked the dr. about meds to prevent that and he said it was not necessary if I only had one mc, but I'm nervous... about everything lol. Any advice as always is appreciated.

Hiya Arlene,

A couple things first. One, has your dr tested you for anything? Bloodwork? Ultrasounds? Anything? Is he basing your IF on your weight totally by the number on the scale? If this is the case, RUN AWAY from that dr. While it is true that overweight women can suffer from being overweight it is my experience that these women also suffer other things that either contribute to their state of being overweight, namely PCOS or some other hormonal imbalance. Heavy women have children every day. Dont let that be his excuse for not treating you the way you should be treated!!

Second, it bothers me GREATLY that he just wants you to start it whenever. Lazy, lazy lazy lazy DOCTORS!! ARGH  You should be starting on a fresh cycle, fresh lining, fresh start! I would first call and ask for a prescription of provera to bring on a period. This is very important to the lining not only for embryo implantation but also to prevent cancer! Its very worrysome for me to hear drs brush this off =(

IMHO, your dr isnt worth the money you are paying him. He is not doing the job you are paying him for =(. My suggestion is to make an appointment and ask that tests be run (blood tests for you and sa for hubby, these are standard practices), then bring on a period, and then try the clomid. Why do the clomid, perhaps ovulate, get pregnant and lose it to bad lining issues?!

 You are paying for a service and not getting the quality you deserve. I'd move on to someone who will take you seriously and treat you with the dignity and care you need.

And welcome to the boards :)

I am overweight and with my insurance there are differn't levels of infertility treatment. The first level which is giving meds. before testing is all covered with copays and the meds. are through the prescription plan. When you get into testing there is a lifetime max of $5,000 which isn't much so we decided to try the medicine first and after a year if it didn't work than get referred to a RE. My OBGYN is also a infertility specilist. Anyway, I too rarely get my period depending on my weight. The higher I go the fewer times I get it. At my lowest weight of 140 it came every 2 months so this has always been an issue. Well anyway I always took BCP to regulate my period. Me and DH decided to start trying last year so I went to see my doctor at the end of May and he said when I finished the back of pills to stop and see what happens for 3 months and if not pregnant or if I didn't get my period to come back. Well October I was back not pregnant and didn't get my period so he gave me provera to bring it on and started me with 50 mg. of clomid. Took clomid on days 5 through 9 once my period started and tested with a OPK starting on day 11. When it changed I had to come in exactly 8 days from the day it changed for a blood test to check progesterone. First month my level was 3.75 so I basically didn't ovulate. The second month he uped me to 100mg and I followed the same schedule and my level came back as a .97 which makes no sense because when you increase the meds. it should at least increase the level so he suggested that the First Response tests weren't working so well and to switch and also he suggested trying one more time but taking clomid for 7 days instead of 5 so the next month I got a clear blue easy OPK and I took 100mg. of clomid from days 5 through 11 and than started tested on day 13 and the kit this time didn't change until day 19 so I came in 8 days after the change and my level was 16.5 and I am now 22 weeks pregnant. Just figured you would like to here a sucess story with clomid. My doctor says he is reading a lot about the clomid for 7 days instead of 5 and he has been doing this for several years and has had a lot of sucess doing it that way.

Thanks for the info. My doctor did some blood tests and I'm sorr to say I don't know what the results were. He also said that we can rule out pcos because the few cysts that I have had including one that needed surgery to remove were all single large cysts and he said that pcos is alot of small cysts. I would love to go see a specialist (hes my ob/gyn) by insurance at the time won't pay for it. He said that I don't need to worry about when my cycle is because I do occasionally get my thing just rarely. I hope this works but if not he's going to send me for a dye tube test (I forget the name). He said I need to try this for 3 months first with this insurance or the test is 500 oop.

HI Arlene

Welcome to the board

I cant really add much more. I do agree with getting a scrit for provera. Its best to try to get a cycle before starting the clomid. Good luck to you
